We are now accepting applications from Duke physician residents and fellows for the 2012/2013 academic year. Applications will be due by August 27, 2012. Up to 12 applicants will be selected by September 1, 2012.

Our first meeting will be September 5, 2012. We will meet as a group on the first Wednesday of every month, from 5pm until 7 pm, from September 2012 until May 2013. Projects will be presented in a graduation ceremony open to the public at the Center for Documentary Studies on June 5, 2013.

Residents meet one-on-one or in small groups with a mentor from the Center for Documentary Studies, as needed, over the course of the academic year. These projects will be of a manageable scope, given the resident’s heavy work demands. Dr. John Moses, the pediatrician and photographer, is well aware of the constraints of participants at this juncture in their careers. This year, we will offer instruction in photography and audio only. (NOTE: Video will not be offered this year.)

Previous and current participants have received extensive attention through their Grand Round talks (available on iTunes), in conferences, working groups, exhibits and press. This experience helps distinguish Duke participants as they graduate and apply for jobs on the national market.

“The teenagers I photographed taught me a lot, even as many of them struggled with serious challenges in their own lives. Having gone out to meet with them in their world, I came away with no neat formulations about teenage pregnancy but rather a richer, more accurate context in which to see them, and I hope, better understand their experience.” – John Moses, M.D.

“People learn using different modalities, and for some people the visual route opens the door to understanding. Even richer than teaching using documentary methods is the experience of the individual who prepares the materials, since documentary studies by their nature include rich human interactions. We learn when we take part, whether as the subject, the documentarian, or the viewer. This is a unusually meaningful project in which I'm very glad to participate." - Dr. Ross McKinney, Director of the Trent Center
